Earth Day 2025

Earth Month is here, and we’re excited to announce that the Devens Forward team is hosting the annual Earth Day Open Streets Event again this April 22nd! Keep reading to learn about the history of Earth Day, why it matters, and how you can get involved this year.

What is Earth Day, and Why Does it Matter?

Earth Day, celebrated annually on April 22, is a global day of environmental education, climate action, and appreciation for our planet. The first Earth Day took place in 1970 when Senator Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin launched a nationwide movement to raise awareness about environmental issues. Sparked by the 1969 oil spill in Santa Barbara, California, this movement led to the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and major environmental legislation, including the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, and Endangered Species Act.

As Devens continues working to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and build climate resilience, Earth Month is a great opportunity to engage the community in meaningful action. Achieving our sustainability goals requires collective effort, and Earth Day serves as an inspiring reminder that every action counts.

Celebrate Earth Day in Devens this Year

One of the best ways to take part in Earth Day is by joining your community in celebration! Devens is teaming up with local organizations to co-host the Open Streets Earth Day event on Tuesday April 22, from 2 – 6 PM at Macpherson Road.

As a gift to you and the planet, this is a car-free event. Come bike, scoot, skate & stroll along MacPherson Road and the Nashua River! Come have some car-free fun and then join us for a guided nature walk at 3pm with the Director of North County Land Trust.

At this event you can:

  • Connect with local residents, businesses, and community organizations that are interested in the environment and sustainability.
  • Learn about volunteering opportunities for projects like rewilding initiatives, pocket forest plantings, and more.
  • Have a fun afternoon in nature!

Join us in making a difference this Earth Day—see you on April 22nd!
