In Devens, embracing sustainable, locally grown food isn’t just about healthier meals—it’s a powerful way to build climate resilience and strengthen our community. When we choose food grown nearby, we reduce emissions from long-distance transport, boost our regional economy, and create a stronger, greener Devens.
Want to know where your food comes from? Start with the MassGrown map, which highlights farms, seasonal markets, and food hubs in our area. Whether it's fresh produce from Dick's Market Garden or specialty items from community growers like Carlson Orchards in Havard, it's never been easier to support local producers. Take advantage of Devens’ CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) program, with pre-purchased bags from farms you trust. For instance, Dick’s Market Garden—spanning nearly 200 acres in Lunenburg, Leominster, and Townsend—offers CSA shares you can pick up every other week from June through October at the Devens Farmers’ Market. Local businesses, such as Devens Recycling (Republic Services), pre-order bags for employees and enjoy direct delivery, helping build staff morale and community ties.
Supporting local growers means supporting sustainable growing. As Chris Sellew, General Manager of Little Leaf Farms in Devens, puts it:
Visit the Devens Farmers Market to shop fresh, local produce, seasonal specialties, and CSA shares. It’s a simple way to support nearby farmers, eat sustainably, and connect with the community.
The Devens region is also fortunate to host farm-to-table restaurants that showcase this local abundance—bringing fresh greens, seasonal fruits, and regionally inspired plates to your table with minimal food miles. Places like Marty’s Corner Café in Devens, Lucia’s Tavola in Ayer, and Forge & Vine and Gibbet Hill Grill in Groton create a direct connection between local farms and our plates, strengthening the link between sustainability and deliciousness.
But sustainability isn’t just about production—it’s also about consumption. Cutting food waste at home is essential. Simple habits like meal planning, saving leftovers, and composting keep food scraps out of landfills while enriching our soil. Devens residents can find composting resources and programs through Devens Public Works. Check it out: https://devensec.com/residents.html

Additionally, the DEC is partnering with Loaves and Fishes to make it easy for you to get involved at the Market on September 16th. This special Market with a Mission will feature an opportunity to donate fresh produce and/or nonperishable items to the food pantry and the Pantry staff will be on hand to outreach to the community about their services.
