This month’s Devens Forward Sustainable Business Spotlight features Accumet Engineering, a growing Devens business helping advance the sustainable redevelopment goals of the Devens Reuse Plan. DEC Director Neil Angus and Devens Eco-Efficiency Center Executive Director Dona Neely met with Greg Sexton, President and CEO, Diana Toruno, General Manager, and Mark Devereaux, Sales Engineer, to learn more about Accumet’s operations and role in the Devens business community.
Accumet Engineering specializes in precision laser and material processing for complex projects in the medical, aerospace, semiconductor, and defense industries. Their work includes precision laser cutting, lapping, polishing, and custom trimming of metals, with processes precise down to millionths of an inch. Some of their machines can even divide a four-inch piece of metal into 22,000 microscopic parts, thinner than a strand of hair.
With more than 40 employees and growing, Accumet has made the most of its Devens location. The company chose Devens because of its accessibility from Route 2 and I-495, proximity to its client base, and access to a growing market. Today, Accumet has more than 50 clients in or within five miles of Devens.
That local network is a major part of Accumet’s sustainability story. By working with nearby businesses and organizations, Accumet helps strengthen the Devens business ecosystem while reducing transportation-related costs and emissions. Their local partnerships range from laser marking parts for Northrup Grumman and producing magnet components for Commonwealth Fusion Systems to laser etching plaques for the Federal Bureau of Prisons. They also support local businesses like Marty’s Corner Café for catering and events.
Accumet also looks for sustainability opportunities within its own operations. The company maximizes the use of its equipment and lasers to extend their useful life, and when equipment needs to be replaced, the team looks for reuse opportunities and more efficient options that can reduce energy use, emissions, and costs. Accumet is also exploring additional building efficiency improvements, with support from resources in the Devens Forward Business Toolkit, including information on state and federal incentives for renewable energy and efficiency upgrades.
Waste reduction is another important focus. Accumet has a robust recycling program for cardboard, scrap metal, precious metals, waste oils, and sludge. Their relatively new facility was also built with sustainability measures including efficient lighting, heating and cooling systems, porous pavement, and biofiltration landscape islands that help reduce stormwater runoff and improve resilience during more frequent and intense storms.
Accumet is also an active participant in the Devens Eco-Efficiency Center’s Green Team Roundtables, where businesses connect around shared services, collaboration opportunities, and waste reduction strategies. After the interview, the team toured Accumet’s production floor, where Dona Neely collected samples of hard-to-manage byproducts to help identify potential reuse outlets through The Great Exchange.
Businesses interested in a similar facility walk-through can reach out to Dona and The Great Exchange at donaneely@tgedevens.com.
Thank you to Greg, Diana, Mark, and the Accumet team for sharing their time and work with us. Accumet is showing how co-location, collaboration, and community can help businesses maximize efficiency and minimize waste. It is another example of how Devens continues to grow as a premier eco-industrial park while advancing sustainability.
